Fireforge Medieval footsoldiers

A recent commission for Fireforge footsoldiers, reusing a red-and-white scheme which has been popular in the past;

A mixture of spears and hand weapons (half and half), and all with liveried shields apart from the two-handed axeman.  As with most such units, I mixed components from several Fireforge kits (they're almost completely interchangeable - brilliant).

With bright schemes (such as red/white) I tend to use mostly neutral colours for hose etc.  I went a bit wild with the spearman on the left though, and his bright blue tunic.  Shields are my usual paper-on-plastic, allowing for easy damaging (simulating a leather cover which has seen some action).

The miniature second from right uses a Templar Sergeants body.  It's one of my favourite mouldings, as it captures the 'turning to notice incoming infidel' moment nicely.  The fact that it's also easy to 'quarter' when painting is just a bonus...

I don't often use the 'non-helmet' heads, but I think with this lighter colour scheme they work okay.  You get several shield styles in the kit, and some work better than others with the various bodies.  The long ones (centre pair) working best with upright posture, and the shorter shields (guy on the left) better with more active / crouching posture.  As you can see from the chap on the right, longer shields with crouching posture equals difficult to rank up (which is why he's on the end of the lineup).

The two-handed axeman is an attempt to offer something which breaks up the line of shields when ranking the miniatures up.  Not everyone wants that, but it draws the eye.
