The Warlord Games Roman kits also come with some fancy command miniatures - Centurion, standard bearer, and an excellent bolt-thrower;
I went with a time-consuming wood-grain effect on the frame of the war machine, took ages but I like it.
Reverse view. This went together very easily (like everything in the kit), and the crew figures tie-in nicely.
I did a small command unit, of Centurion and standard-bearer. Just an excuse to use a mix of metal finishes, really. The command figures differ between the 'veteran' and 'normal' legion sets, which offers even more options to personalise.
The Centurion (rear view). I went with a fairly heavily-tanned skin tone. I tend to always paint caucasian skin tones deeper than you might expect, based on observation of those who live a very outdoorsy life (which professional soldiers of the day did). They're always a shade more tanned, and not a sun-bed orange-brown way, but weathered, and deep.
A few more views to round off the post.
